It’s hard to one-up a classic. In film, music, and especially with kicks. Sure, follow ups might be solid but overtaking an original? Damn tough. Seems like Vans is making a strong case to do just that by going back in the Vault to revamp the Sk8-Hi once again.
We’ve seen the Vans Vault Sk8-Hi Zip Lx before and they’ve always been a hit. The standard Sk8-His have always been higher quality than other companies’ retros and with an acceptable price point to boot. Add a fancier name and you damn well better come through with an even better product.
Looks like Vans came through in spades. The silhouette remains the same but gets a major upgrade with the materials. Pigskin suede, full grain leather panels and sockliner, leather laces, and reinforced eyelets give the shoe a luxurious feel, hence the LX designation. A zipper on the back of a shoe seems superfluous but from an aesthetic standpoint it’s a nice addition. It’s probably for the weirdos that lace their kicks so high and tight that taking them off damn near takes the jaws of life to accomplish.
The first two colors set to drop are in a medium blue/navy mockup and a camel brown/olive pairing. Arriving at Vans Vault retailers now, both are equally intriguing and worthy of purchase. They’re a nice departure from the standard retros these days.
