‘The fast life’ can be a slippery slope or the entrance into something great and for Asher Roth, Vic Mensa and Donnie Trumpet, early twenties are a little bit quicker than their peers. The Philadelphia-based MC dropped the tracklist and cover art for his latest project, RetroHash, alongside a single with Mensa exploring just how far down the rabbit hole one can go without return.
It’s a familiar collaboration for all involved, as Mensa and Donnie appeared on Roth’s 2011 mixtape Pabst & Jazz while part of Kids These Days, also joining him onstage to perform their rendition of “Hard Times” on several occasions. In their latest, “The Fast Life,” Roth opens things up by relaying stories of kids out in the world too soon, pushing their boundaries too far and realizing life before they’re meant to while Mensa continues to prove why I called him 2014’s breakout Hip-Hop Star’ a few months back, playing on carefully crafted schemes, dipping his toe in the singing waters and consistently developing his brand and sound into one of the more cohesive, multi-layered artists out right now.
Behind it all is Donnie Trumpet, a name to know as his production and sinewy horn finds it’s way into projects across the country, seeping out from Chicago where you’d be hard-pressed to find an artist he hasn’t worked with. Full tracklist below.
