The World According to Julie J: Dear Kevin Gates, I Love You

By / 03.16.14

SXSW. Plenty of grumbling to get here, but once you make the trek and are part of the masses roaming down Sixth Street, you remember why you came and are already planning on returning next year.

Thursday night, let alone Wednesday night, were dope. I mean, I would walk a far distance to see Kevin Gates. Like, at least a mile, and that’s precisely what I did on Wednesday night. SXSW is so freaking overwhelming that I wondered why I even tried to plan my days out. Upon arriving, though, it was all too much so I half joked that the reason I was going to SXSW was to see him.

But, after actually watching him Wednesday night, and seeing his emotions magnified by 100% live, my little joke became way more serious. He brought up the “Trap Girl” beat, and rapped the acapella “IHOP” over it, which was incredible, and I can say with certainty that you haven’t lived until you seen him screaming “Smiling Faces” at the crowd. He was incredible, and someone I highly recommend seeing if the opportunity arises.

Also, audience members were the first people ever to see him perform, and I think just hear, “Arm & Hammer.” You can get a taste of his live performance of that song above, and listen to an mp3 quality version here.

Don’t forget, By Any Means is out this Tuesday.

Future – “Covered N Money” (Prod. By Sonny Digital)

Super Future’s back! His wedding singer songs are cool, but nothing in his catalog beats banging, bass heavy songs like “Covered N Money.” Sonny Digital and Future always have some crazy chemistry together, and “Covered N Money” may blow your car apart.

Que – “Time” Video

Beware, AJ, and I were at a press-only event for YG’s new album, and all of the other artists who would be on that showcase later that night were already there, including Que.

Music and an artist should technically be separated. Dude does something wack? Well, don’t let that sway your opinion of the music, right? That’s what people tell me, although I absolutely love it when I meet an artist whose music I love, and he (or she) happens to be super nice (read our interview with Que here). I don’t expect it, but when it happens, I love it, and that makes me appreciate their music even more.

I always liked “O.G. Bobby Johnson” and “Clip So Long,” but after seeing him at SXSW I really, really like him and respect what he’s doing. Add “Time” to that list. The Sonny Digital-produced banger features a slick video with a relatable message in it. Even if you’re not a rapper, you can relate to running out of time. Shit, this writer right here always manages to run out of time.

Dirty Glove Bastard x LiveMixtapes – #BoutThatLife Mixtape

The minds of Dirty Glove Bastard and LiveMixtapes always, always curate the best events (if you’re into their flavor of music, which I obviously am). #BoutThatLife is their annual SXSW show, and this mixtape promotes it.

Kevin Gates, Young Thug, Migos, Que, K Camp, and more. Have I died and gone to heaven? Maybe? Or maybe SXSW has just got me feeling all loopy and delusional and out of sorts. I’m never even really sure what day it is when I’m out here.

johnny cinco - I Got Em

Johnny Cinco – “I Got Em” (Rich Homie Quan Diss)

Am I wrong for wanting some old fashioned beef? Johnny Cinco is another rapper out of Atlanta, who rolls with the Migos and the QC label. They all sort of sound the same, and rap over the same type of beats, but the voicemails and phone calls of these two are kind of hilarious.

Since they were both in Austin and nothing of note went down, we’ll assume (and hope) everything stays on songs and not in the streets.

DJ Scream Ft. Que, Gunplay, Waka Flocka & Tracy T – “Always”

Most of the time, so many features on a track turn me off. But, if you look at it from the perspective of DJ Scream is just rounding up rappers, vs trying his hand at actually rapping – with his literal screams, I can’t imagine him scream rapping – I decided that I’m okay with it all.

DJ Scream has an upcoming album called Hunger Pains, and “Always” is the first single.
