Anyone who’s a fan of Nike’s Kobe line has been waiting for this moment for months. The Nike Kobe 9 EM ‘Bruce Lee.’ Sites might call them the ‘Bruce Lee’ colorway but they’re definitely closer to the Game of Death with the color choices.* The name comes from Bruce’s less than conspicuous wardrobe from the flick, and the blood he spilled fighting three martial arts masters in the final fight scenes.
No matter the nickname, fans of the previous signature kicks from the Black Mamba should be pleased. Sans the fact Flyknit’s nowhere to be found on this version of the Kobe 9. Not sure why the change was made, especially since the 9 was the first Nike Basketball shoe featuring Flyknit. The kicks also look surprisingly similar to the Kobe 8 Elites due to the use of Engineered Mesh, which creates a reverted take for a new model, something that’s rare for Nike Basketball and the Kobe line. Maybe we can expect to see a Flywire version later down the line?
The accent stitching highlighting Kobe’s Achilles injury is on the heel of both shoes (but lower for spacing purposes), and a closer look at the midsole shows the blood speckles. Ill. The outsole and cushioning remain the same, so expect similar types of comfort and responsiveness that Nike’s Kobe line has provided buyers with for years.
For anyone more interested in rocking Kobes off the court, these fit the bill. A sleek, low profile shoe shouting out one of the pioneers of modern martial arts is a sure winner, even without Flyknit technology.
The Kobe 9 EM ‘Bruce Lee’ drops March 29th.
* — Don’t even mention Kill Bill referring to these.
