‘Parks & Rec’ Finale Will Have So Many Musicians It Might As Well Be Bonnaroo

Reports emerged in February that the most Midwestern musician of all time, Wilco lead singer Jeff Tweedy, would appear on the most Midwestern sitcom of all time, NBC’s Parks & Recreation*.

Well not only is Tweedy set to appear all scraggly and “aw golly” soft-spoken for the show’s season finale, but a few other notable musicians are going to join him. Show producer Michael Schur told The A.V. Club that The Decemberists, Yo La Tengo, Ginuwine and indie band Letters To Cleo will also appear, all to help the show’s characters put on the Unity Concert music festival.

This is LITERALLY the coolest thing to ever happen on this show.

Schur spoke glowingly about nabbing Hoboken, N.J., indie godfathers Yo La Tengo, who will play the band “Bobby Knight Rangers” in reference to a band Chris Pratt’s character Andy Dwyer mentions earlier in the season.

“One of our writers, Donick Carey, is very good friends with the band Yo La Tengo, who are one of my favorite bands, and he emailed them and said, ‘Hey, do you guys want to play Bobby Knight Ranger?’ And they were, like, ‘Sure!’ So Yo La Tengo makes an appearance as Bobby Knight Ranger, playing ‘Sister Christian.’”

As Schur recalls, “The three of them showed up, they got dressed up in red sweaters, khakis, and white wigs, and they played ‘Sister Christian’ in front of a thousand people, introducing themselves as ‘Bobby Knight Ranger.’ It was one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen…and completely delightful. It was just really cool.

Tweedy’s character will be the ex-lead singer of a formerly popular band called Land Ho!, which Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope and Pratt’s Dwyer are trying to reunite for the festival. Schur also explained to EW.com several weeks ago Tweedy’s appeal:

“It was like, who is the ideal person to play this role? And we’re all huge Wilco fans so we were like, ‘Jeff Tweedy.’ And he happened to be coming to town anyway. His manager called him and apparently he is a fan of the show.”

The episode will air on April 24 on NBC.

And before we forget, make sure to brush up on your “Pony” before watching. Or else you’re on our “done-zo list.”
