Something interesting happened last year while listening to Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris: Vince Staples sort of became a star.

While Earl seemed to squander his chance to ascend to a new echelon of rap standing, Vince Staples tore through his guest appearances ensuring that he’d be the album’s story. Staples effectively turned Doris into his own showcase, making us look forward to his next full-length work.

Well here it is. Shyne Coldchain 2 carries on Staples’ momentum he earned last year as the music is incredible and Vince is at his sarcastic, introspective, clever best. “Ain’t no wrong or right it’s just the sh*t you do and sh*t you don’t/ friends that’s killin’ n****s is the only ones you praying for/ but words ain’t ever stop no bullet, is you scared?”

The production and Vince’s voice stay mostly brooding as if he’s projecting from a basement with one single lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. He’s less rapping and more venting about his dire surroundings. Staples isn’t reading rhymes from a book. He’s reciting memories in the most haunting ways possible. Even the ostensibly upbeat “Nate” starts off with “as a kid all I wanted was to kill a man.”

Damn.
