Urban Prep Academies in Chicago sees your “Trapper of the Year” Award four times in a row, Jeezy. And they raise you five years and running graduating 100% of its senior class.
For the fifth consecutive year, 100% of the seniors from Urban Prep’s Englewood and West campuses and the inaugural graduating class from its Bronzeville Campus have been accepted to four-year colleges and universities.
Students from all three campuses, faculty, parents and other special guests, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, celebrated the momentous occasion with an assembly on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Seniors from the class of 2014 have been accepted to over 186 colleges and universities, and have amassed over $11 million in scholarships and grants.
Maurice Garland and I were chopping it up on G-Chat the other day. We were both confused how reactions to positive stories – in particular wiz kid Akintunde Ahmad – were occasionally met with reservation, both online and in the real world. “Why is this news?” many of the complaints would ask.
For the life of us, neither Maurice or myself could figure out how – when overwhelmingly feel-good stories such as Akintunde’s or even one like Urban Prep’s five-year run – they could be looked down upon. In a day and age when missing planes, school stabbings, senseless murders occurring by the surplus or even the heartbreaking mystery that is Relisha Rudd’s, coming across news that helps restore even a fraction of faith in humanity is sometimes all a person needs to not say to hell with everything and see the worst in life.
Because, straight up, T.I. said it best years ago, “Life ain’t always a dream and horrible sh*t happens.” So, yes, if I have to hear about kids being molested or multi-billion dollar corporations screwing their consuming pupblic out of millions or hiding fatal deficiencies in their products all to protect their bottom line, you’re damn right I’m going to praise the good in the world.
A big salute and congratulations to all the young men graduating this year to attend universities such as Bethune-Cookman, Chicago State, Cornell, DePaul, Florida A&M, Hampton (STAND UP!), Howard (sit down), Northwestern, Kansas, South Carolina State, Syracuse and more.
These are the type of statistics involving Chicago’s educational structure I don’t mind reading about.
