High School Football Movie ‘We Could Be King’ Looks To Be Well-Worth The DVR Space

The City of Brotherly Love looks to be two-for-two with upcoming sports documentaries. Not only is Allen Iverson’s film on the immediate horizon, We Could Be King looks to tug at every emotional heartstring possible.

Philadelphia’s educational problems are well-documented, yet remain largely a foreign topic to those outside the city. King details the unique union between two rival high schools and football teams in the city – Philadelphia’s Martin Luther King High School and Germantown High – forced to merge due to budget cuts.

Two-time Emmy-nominated director Judd Ehrlich illuminates the often hostile tale of young men forced to recognize and embrace the concept of brotherhood where seeds of disdain and rivalry once sprouted. And perhaps there resides the film’s most enduring trait. From a city notorious for its “take no prisoners” mentality, the lessons of trust and love (of the game and the teammate lined beside them) somehow capture life and the purpose of it under a different light.

We Could Be King makes it national TV debut April 26 at 8:00 p.m. EST on ESPN2. “Marking your calendars” and “setting your DVRs” should already be a foregone conclusion at this point.
