The last time Stan Van Gundy roamed an NBA sideline he and Dwight Howard were having more awkward moments than Princess Di and Prince Charles as a married couple. Fast forward to the present day and Jeff’s younger brother is back in the Association, this time taking his animated personality to Motown.
Sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday night that Van Gundy and the Pistons have verbally agreed to a five-year pact worth an estimated $35 million, with an official announcement on course for this week.
Before becoming official, yours truly figured Van Gundy would have best fit in Golden State. Per Yahoo Sports and Sports Illustrated’s Point Forward, the reason Stan chose the midwest rather than Northern California was not money-related, but more so all about control. Detroit was willing to allow SVG final say on personnel decisions where the Dubs weren’t as kosher with the idea.
Moving forward, it’s going to be interesting what Stan does with guys like Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith whose first year in Detroit was anything but a success. Then, of course, there’s Greg Monroe and his restricted free agent status. Stan’s got his hands full moving forward this summer, but the most appetizing factor of Stan’s influence in Motown?
How he’s going to inevitably help improve the game of monster-in-the-making in Andre Drummond.
