It’s been nearly three weeks since news broke that Apple would be acquiring Beats Electronics, the brainchild of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, for $3.2 billion. At the time, the deal was reported as imminent, but here we are, weeks later and no announcement or confirmation. So what is holding up the monumental deal?
Well, as Billboard reports, that exact proclamation is one of the reasons the deal isn’t finalized yet. Remember the time when Dre drunkenly celebrated the fact that he had become rap’s first billionaire with Tyrese and a few Heinekens? Well, that incident may soon cross over into infamous territory. According to Billboard:
“That Video Freaked Them Out.”
This is our favorite bit of gossip from our sources. Apparently, the Apple family near imploded with outrage when that video went up on Facebook of an ‘excited’ Dr. Dre with R&B singer/former Coca Cola pin-up Tyrese. In the video they share, in language perhaps unsuitable for a family blog, how Dre will be hip-hop’s first billionaire and other nice things about Compton. People often forget that despite Apple being this company that makes sexy products, with sexy profit margins, and sexy retail outlets…it is not in fact a very sexy company. It is a conservative company, particularly without the leadership of its guiding light Steve Jobs who would shake things up massively on a daily basis. This is not the kind of thing Apple is used to.
Sucks to come to the harsh realization that having a couple of brews with your bros and hitting the ‘gram to celebrate a payday could cost you a few billions, but such is life in 2014 I guess. Billboard’s reporting that the deal is still happening, despite the hiccups, but if it doesn’t, this is just another case of when keeping it real goes wrong.
