DC and Warner Bros. have pretty much been playing catch up to the film universe that Marvel Studios has established, but on the small-screen, DC is the hands down champ. The fan-favorite Arrow has garnered big ratings for the CW and completely obliterates Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the fanboy world. Sparked by this momentum, DC has at least three series slated for the 2014-2015 TV season. And Fox’s Gotham is easily one of the most anticipated and this trailer might illustrate why.
Set in a different universe than the Nolan Batman films, Gotham is a prequel to the story of Batman. The series stars Ben McKenzie as a young and less grizzled James Gordon, Sean Pertwee as a bad-ass Alfred Pennyworth, and David Mazouz as an adolescent Bruce Wayne, fresh after the death of his parents. On the surface it looks like your average police drama, but the trailer definitely says otherwise. The trailer demonstrates that a possible part of Gotham’s charm will be documenting the growth of the legendary Dark Knight and his most trusted ally.
Of course, a series about Gotham City has to have a healthy dose of nutjob villains, like Jada Pinkett Smith’s sadistic and possibly superhuman, Fish Mooney. And while a certain clown prince of crime doesn’t show up in the trailer, other major villains, like The Penguin, The Riddler, Poison Ivy and Catwoman, will also be getting the year one treatment.
But I’ll stop talking now and just let the trailer speak for itself. If the actual series can offer up a show that is as entertaining as Arrow but clearly distinct in tone from its CW counterpart, then this could be another hit for the house that Bat built.
