Steve Kerr seemed like a sure thing for the Knicks. There’s the connection between the former Bulls guard and his old head coach Phil Jackson plus pockets deep enough to go after him. But in the end, Kerr bolted all the way left, taking the head coaching job with the Golden State Warriors.

Kerr agreed to a five-year, $25 million deal Wednesday, according to his agent, Mike Tannenbaum. He takes the position recently vacated by Mark Jackson, who was fired a little over a week ago. The Warriors are coming off consecutive trips to the playoffs for the first time since 1992.

The TNT broadcast analyst was long thought to be a sure hire for the Knicks, having won three titles with Jackson. The two had reportedly been in talks since March before Jackson took his new position with New York. Now, they’re left looking at other options now that their prime target is off the table.
