Taylor Bennett’s Mainstream Music is weird–but we mean that in the best way possible. The newest full-length project from the Chicago rapper wasn’t properly sold on previous leaks like “Hope” or “New Chevy.” Those latter two tracks gave a glimpse into the sorts of otherworldly sounds that are on Mainstream Music, but they weren’t it.
Just press play on “Intro” and shoot off into space with Bennett as he takes listeners to that it: soundscapes handled by Saint The Good Kid, MuzzY and Monte Booker, among others, and hurried along by Taylor’s double-time flow and mournful hooks. There’s no mistaking that he’s Chance’s brother on this project (the nasally flow is a dead giveaway), but Mainstream Music is more ethereal and, frankly, odd than his kin’s projects. And this is just fine by us.
