Normally, we shy away from posting album snippets and video teasers because who the hell likes a tease? Anyway, as fast as things move in today’s music world, wait a few days and full version of whatever the content is will be available anyway so it’s a waste to spend any time or energy on a short bit.

As a soft rule, sometimes we tend to bend when necessary and a chance to even hear a minute snippet of Wu-Tang Clan’s Once Upon a Time in Shaolin falls under the exceptions category.

Everyone knows by now that the Clan’s set to sell off a single copy of the “secret” album to the highest bidder and early reports have offers in the millions. Unless a large group of us band together and initiate a Kickstarter campaign, the price tag means we most likely will never hear, much less own this mythical, supposedly dynamic piece of work.

That’s where Forbes* enters the picture, having traveled to Morocco where the album is being stored in a safe place and bringing back not only detailed info about Once Upon… but also a rare audio morsel to share with the rest of us.

As it turns out, the album’s being stored in a fancy box-within-a-box-within-a-box nestled away far from the reach of bootleggers. Producer Tarik “Cilvaringz” Azzougarh sits down with Zack O’Malley Greenburg to breakdown questions raised about the decision to only offer one copy (read the full article here) as well as allowing the writer to hear part of the finished product.

* — There’s a mention in the article that they could take the album on an exhibition tour “through museums, galleries, festivals and the like” where people can pay “likely in the $30-$50 range” to listen to the project. Yes, just to listen to it.

** — We won’t even get into the fact that they selected Forbes – which is neither a traditional rap nor music outlet – to give this privileged access. It’s one of those ways in which Rae’s possibly right about RZA’s perception of who Wu the are and which people constitute their true fan base.
