We – or at least I – don’t dislike 50. His music isn’t as strong as it once was but he’s still a fun guy to have around. As far as rap villains go, he plays the role well, relishing in it at times.
Along with Kanye, Killer Mike and Danny Brown, 50 is arguably one of the best interviews around. He’s thoughtful, honest and entertaining. And he possesses a big sense of humor. And during his extended interview with Power 105’s The Breakfast Club, Fif didn’t hold back on much of anything. Topics ranged from the first pitch seen around the world, finding Ashanti hot, loving Ciara, Young Buck’s suggested reunion, Solange wailing on Jay Z and how Beyonce almost did the same to him.
But yeah, he talked about Animal Ambition sales and Charlamagne breaks his balls for bringing album sales into rap’s collective consciousness. Turnabout is fair play since all Curtis used to care about is numbers and now he cares about making music for people. When others were doing the same, he laughed and trolled. Times and situations change I tell you.
Animal Ambition sale expectations:
“I can’t do good. In my head, what good is because of the success I’ve had in the past, that’s so much lower. I’ve done so much that having the music that makes people enjoy themselves, that actually means something at the moment is the goal. Like when you said, ‘Do you care whether you sell the record or not?’ I do care that it actually is within our culture. That it means something.”
“I was doing so much. It’s all more than I thought. I didn’t know that. You had to die, you gotta have a double CD, you gotta be Tupac and get killed to do ten million records. All Eyez On Me, that was the only time I ever saw it before. When it goes past ten to thirteen I was like, ‘What?'”
On Jay Z-Solange:
“He [Jay Z] did the right thing. As much as people would like to laugh at it, it’s really laughing at so much success. I would’ve probably f-cked her up under those circumstances. I ain’t gon’ lie. I would’ve did it once or twice. ‘Chill! Chill!’ [punches air]. You in an elevator that you don’t know the camera’s running so he’s not considering corporate sponsors. He’s just not responding for whatever reason because we don’t know what’s motivating her. And then you see Beyoncé not moving.”
The time Beyonce almost tried to fight him:
“One time [Beyoncé] jumped off of a ledge and came running over cause she thought me and Jay had issues. And I’m like, ‘What the f-ck? Did she really just jump and run up on me like that?’
“We was at the Cosmopolitan [hotel]. She jumped out and was like this, “What?! That Bonnie and Clyde forreal! You try this or what, boy?! I’m here!” She bugged out at me. I looked and Jay starts laughing. He’s like, “Yo, you know what it is.” I said, “Oh sh-t! What the f-ck y’all got going on, man?” Bey jumped down off of that joint like, “What?! Wassup?!” Matter of fact, Floyd [Mayweather] was there. We were in the Cosmopolitan in Vegas and I was bringing him to say wassup to Jay because Jay don’t really like him.”
