Any esteemed Martin aficiando can attest once ol’ Marty Mar begins donning the goatee, that’s normally when the series began to fall off the side of a cliff.
By in large, a similar sentiment doesn’t necessarily ring true for his silver screen career during the mid-’90s. Around the time of its release in 1996, A Thin Line Between Love & Hate received more than its fair share of negative reviews. Call it the Martin fan in me or call it me never confusing anyone for the world’s greatest movie critic, but Thin Line still serves as a personal favorite 18 years following its initial release.
A classic? Not really, but it’s not a movie I never turn away from whenever it’s on either. It’s cast is lowkey noteworthy, too, with Regina King, Bobby Brown, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Della Reese, Tracy Morgan, Faizon Love, Snoop Dogg and more alongside Martin and Lynn Whitfield.
If nothing else, however, the movie taught a 10 or 11-year-old young chump like myself two very vital lessons at a very impressionable age. Always watch who you lay down with. And never, never, never drop the “L word” unless you absolutely mean it.
