It might not be the Black Hippy album that the American people crave, but from the sounds of it, These Days should sit just fine with TDE heads and rap nerds. That much was made clear when Ab-Soul dropped through Hot 97 to chat with Peter Rosenberg on Real Late With Rosenberg. The interview runs 33 minutes, and is chock-full of quotables.

On his excitement for the new project:

Well, I mean, not only has it been quite some time. It’s been about two years. I’m a fan of the culture. I just wanna add to that. I wanna take this thing further than it can—Take it as far as it can go.

On what fans can expect from the project:

Know for sure that it’s a Top Dawg party… It’s definitely a Top Dawg party. I got all the homies from the camp…I definitely got my home team with me. My guy Soundwave, Tae Beast, Skyhe Hutch, Tommy Black, but it’s a few little special guests on there. I don’t know if we—I might have to come back and holla. I might have to come bring them.

On the competitive nature within Black Hippy:

That’s how it is. You ain’t battled your home boy, [what have you done]? I battled all my homies, and they don’t all even rap… it’s just the love of the sport, the love of the culture.

On his issues with light sensitivity:

That’s why I always wear shades. Right, the brightness is probably kept best down. I had a good nine, ten years to see it for real. I kinda remember that a bit. A lot of great things happened in that time. You know what I’m saying? I did some great things in that time…I hear and memorize. I gotta kinda memorize my steps in a sense.

That’s obviously a small sample size of an interview that delves into Ab’s backstory quite a bit. The biggest takeaway, of course, is the hype train for These Days growing louder and louder. That June 24th release is closing fast.
