The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences has decided to change some terms and conditions of their Grammy award. The most noteworthy amendment is their rules on writers’ credits for sampled music. Per Grammy.org:

Before now, a song that featured a sample or an interpolation of another song would not be eligible for a songwriters award, except for in the best rap song category.

Now, samples are OK in all songwriting categories, regardless of genre.
“Previously, samples or interpolations were allowed in only one songwriting category: Best Rap Song, in recognition of the unique craft of writing rap songs.”

For instance: Jay Z‘s “99 Problems,” or Kanye West‘s “Gold Digger” would not have been eligible for song of the year in previous years; now, both songs would be eligible in that category.

Other changes included category creations and a couple name changes. But this is pretty huge in how it benefits rap music.

Not only will more contemporary songs get more recognition in various categories, but you will also see a lot of other genres feeling more comfortable with sampling, without fear of missing out on song writing credits and awards.

The 57th annual GRAMMY Awards will be on Feb. 8, 2015, with a total of 83 categories.
