Mexico’s Luis Montes Scores Awesome Goal, Then Suffers Terrible Injury Sidelining Him From World Cup

Not a great Monday to be a Mexican soccer fan.

El Tri played Ecuador in a friendly on Saturday afternoon, and won 3-1, which should translate into good, pre-World Cup vibes. And Mexico’s first goal was a scorcher: ripped from 25 yards out by ascending national team star Luis Montes; however, immediately following that score Ecuador’s Segundo Castillo came crashing into Montes. The pair then crumpled to the ground, Castillo’s tearing his ACL and Montes’ breaking his leg.

All of which, this entire sequence of events, you can watch below, by the way. On a scale of Willis McGahee-2003 BCS National Championship to Kevin Ware, it’s an Anderson Silva kick, only if Silva were running full-speed into dude’s knee. So it might not be worth watching the part of the clip after the celebrations die down if you’re squeamish… Or a Mexican national team fan.

Mexico will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in Chicago on June 3 for their second-to-last pre-World Cup friendly. Their first World Cup match is against Cameroon on June 13.
