Saba has been on a tear lately. In the lead up to his latest release, COMFORTzone, the 19-year-old MC from Chicago has created a buzz by utilizing the tools all around him. On “Butter” he teams up with the magical Jamila Woods of fellow Chicago outfit M&O. The track is a sort of reminiscence on the past few months which have seen the young artist break out of his city, playing shows at college campuses across the Midwest and appears to channel a young K Dot, a la O(verly) D(edicated).
Having tapped fellow Second City songstress Eryn Allen Kane for “Burnout,” Saba seems to be aware of the talent that surrounds his scene. If anything, the string of singles and videos leading to the release of COMFORTzone has cast the light on a new, capable voice from Chicago. It’s not the nasally-meanderings of Chance or the mouthful, genre-bending steez of Vic Mensa, but rather wholly Saba, who may prove to be this summer’s star. It’ll be exciting to see how much more of that distinct voice we get when COMFORT arrives on July 15.
