Football’s a cruel dame and she’s often at her worst in added time. The FIFA World Cup’s group stage match between Switzerland and Ecuador unfortunately saw the latter country experience defeat in the worst way. A hero-ball tackle on a sure goal led the Alps men to a poised counterattack. Then the duel got shut down when Ricardo Rodriguez’s crosses met Haris Seferovic’s boot for the game-sealing goal. Switzerland won the match 2-1 and, for the moment, sit on top of their group with three points.
I’m watching this footage again and it’s frustrating to see Ecuador slip up with such poor shape. The team looks worn and don’t track back as their defenders lose sight of Seferovic’s run. Also credit the refs for letting the teams play despite the obvious foul leading to Switzerland’s goal. There’s a good chance the game doesn’t wildly unfold if a whistle blows: enabling Ecuador with more time to regroup.
Oh well, on to this France VS Honduras match. Holler at me if you’re watching it on Univision.
