When Aaron McGruder, creator of The Boondocks, announced he would not be involved with the show’s fourth season, there was confusion. For one, many wondered how the show would survive without the brain behind. Also, McGruder’s statement seemed less inflammatory and more tempered than what many are used to hearing from a normally outspoken guy. Sure, he still had Black Jesus set to air on the network but Boondocks was his baby. He was going to give it up without a fight?

Now, the latter part makes more sense as news comes out he’s inked a deal with the network labeled a “first-look overall deal.” Not only will his Black Jesus air next month, he’s also set to produce Hooligan Squad, a new live-action adventure pilot for a comedy centered around the future and U.S. insurgency into a Japan-occupied San Francisco, all set in the future.

“‘With The Boondocks and the upcoming Black Jesus series, we consider Aaron very instrumental in the success of Adult Swim, and this deal is the continuation of a great partnership,” said Mike Lazzo, executive vp and creative director at Adult Swim.’

“Added McGruder: ‘It’s a rare thing to have a network home. Even more rare is a home that wants to see you grow and expand as a creator. Adult Swim is headed to new horizons, and I’m happy to be along for the ride.'”

Whatever it takes to get McGruder a check and a platform plus more material for us in the long run sounds like a square deal.
