While he may have initially just been paying homage, Drake reportedly ended up paying cold hard cash to Filmore legend Rappin’ 4-Tay for borrowing his bars to use on YG’s hit “Who Do You Love?”

Drake’s verse undeniably borrows from 4-Tay’s 1994 hit “Playaz Club,” so much so that, according to TMZ, Drake forked over $100k without ever even being sued. And thus Drake sets a dangerous precedent along the lines of Mac Miller settling out of court with Lord Finesse last year after being sued for rapping over his beat.

In years past, “biting” was a cardinal sin of Hip-Hop, the absolute worst thing an emcee could do. Now as the genre evolves, a rapper reciting an old bar or two is often seen as a small token of appreciation or reverence, a simple hat tip to an artist who came before them and paved the way and a wink to fans who know of the lyrics already.

If this precedent holds up, Curren$y may go broke paying back Outkast, Pimp C, Snoop Dogg and a host of other artists he’s borrowed from in the past. Hov is going to have to write Ms. Voletta Wallace a blank check and Lil Wayne will be breaking the bank for an innumerable amount of rappers he’s paid similar tribute to throughout his career.

Finally, in the “no shit Sherlock” portion of the story, while he was initially peturbed, TMZ says 4-Tay says he’s no longer offended.

For reference, listen to both songs below. Key in on 4-Tay’s opening lines which read the following:

“I got a ho named Reel-to-Reel
She got a buddy named SP-12, now you know the deal
We gets freaky in the studio late night
That’s why the beats that you hear are coming real tight
Something to roll to, something to stroll t
If you’s a playa in the game, this will hold you
Mo’ money, mo’ money for the bank roll
Stick to the script, don’t slip in the ’94
A lot of fools put salt in the game
To where these women get the notion that they running the game.”
