Shortly after Honest hit shelves, Future Ruffin revealed a second album was in the plans for 2014, so perhaps this is the first glimpse into the untitled project. Produced by DJ Clue, “Rock Star” was unable to make it past the cutting room floor the first time around due to sample clearances (George Michael’s “Careless Whisper”).
If it did, however, the cut would’ve been welcomed with open arms. Heading into Honest, the hope (from me, at least) was Future reviving the energy and addictiveness he left tattooed throughout Pluto. Not to say Honest didn’t have its moments, but that, overall, was anything but the case.
“Rock Star” probably wouldn’t have resulted in a smash hit, but who knows. Future and Nicki going for the gusto would’ve been a welcomed change of pace had things gone a tad differently anyway.
