NBA Fast Break: LeBron’s 23 Again, Derrick Rose Calls Out ‘Doubters,’ Lakers Finally Hire A Coach

By / 07.28.14

1. LeBron took to his Instagram to make it official – he’s going back to number 23 this season. Five years after saying on live television that nobody should wear 23 in honor of Michael, Bron is going back on his word and donning 23 and saving a lot of cheap fans (like myself) some dough.

2. Speaking of LeBron, former teammate Dwyane Wade had some choice words for James this week saying, “Well, it used to be Kobe Bryant… the second best all time…. now, I have a new favorite player to play against… my former teammate, LeBron James.” If that’s the case lets just hope LBJ’s return to Miami isn’t one of the 30 games Wade misses next year for “rest” or whatever he was doing last year.

3. Moving on from former ‘Bron teammates to possible future ‘Bron teammates, Kevin Love has decided to withdraw from Team USA basketball and skip the FIBA World Championships in Spain next month.

4. Despite what Bill Simmons may think, this has nothing with possibly being outplayed by the Gasol brothers in the tourney. It has everything to do with his pending trade to wherever the hell he’s going. With his history of fluke injuries, sitting out’s a necessary evil.

5. Also sitting out the tournament is Blake Griffin, thus opening up the door for the one and only Boogie Cousins representing the U.S. of A. in Spain. And really, who doesn’t want that?

6. James Harden caused a stir last week by saying that only he and Dwight Howard were the only cornerstones of the Rockets and “…the rest of the guys are role players or pieces that complete our team.” Harden is softening his stance saying on Twitter that he’ll miss Chandler Parsons and yes he too was a role player during his time in Oklahoma City.

7. Harden said nothing of Parsons’ brother* calling him an “entitled bitch,” but I guess that’s a topic for another day.

8. The Lakers finally hired someone to coach their smorgasbord roster giving the job to Byron Scott. Scott is, of course, a former member of the Showtime Lakers of the ’80s and has a winning percentage of .444 as a coach in his 13 seasons. The Lakers bullet points sort of write their own jokes, don’t they?

9. Carmelo Anthony told ESPN, “I want to win, I don’t care about the money,” just a week after re-signing with the New York Knicks for a maximum contract. That sound you just heard was the sound of the Bulls and Rockets rolling their eyes.

10. Speaking of the Bulls, Derrick Rose was at an adidas event to unveil his new shoe, the D-Rose 5 Boost. Of his return this season Rose said, “I still have goals. Seeing those doubters out there, it’s gonna be funny seeing them eat their words.”

11. In other shoe news, Nike has apparently trademarked a new logo for Kyrie Irving causing many to speculate that he may be next in line for a new signature shoe. If anything, this is just Nike realizing that Kyrie will be in the spotlight more than ever now playing alongside the most famous player in the league every night.

12. And lastly in a transparent move, the NBA is reportedly exploring the idea of extending the All-Star break to an entire week this season. Last year, the break lasted five days and apparently the move is for “additional rest.” That sounds fine, until you read that it would also increase the amount of back-to-back games players would have to play during the season and it just sounds strange.

* – There are no better basketball follows on Twitter than the players’ brothers. Between Parsons’ brother, Ron Artest’s brother, Kevin Durant’s brother and Derrick Rose’s brother you will never not be entertained when something goes down.
