Nardwuar Takes Wu-Tang Clan On Surprising Trip Through All 36 Chambers

By 07.08.14

“This guy knows a lot… You’re starting to surprise me, kid.”

Cool as his subjects fancy themselves, there’s a point in every Nardwuar interview where The Human Serviette whittles down his opponent* to a point of disbelief. And for eight minutes, the RZA manages to keep his guard up. But then Nardwuar, as he’s wont to do, brings up the kind of easily forgotten detail that Bobby Digital’s own mom probably has a tough time remembering: the exact television channel that the RZA used to watch old kung-fu movies on (channel five, in case you were wondering).

Needless to say, it’s a blast watching the Serviette grill the RZA on topics ranging from martial arts flicks to classic hip-hop to his earliest moniker, Prince Rakeem. That last segment is killer. As Bobby puts it, the industry was trying to turn him into an MC Hammer/Fresh Prince clone, but if you inspect the Rakeem vinyl (supplied by Nardwuar, of course), “What it says there? Wu-Tang mix. I was already ready. They just wasn’t ready, son. Then we had the ‘DMD. Dick’em Down. You come around, we dick’em down.'”

Wu-Tang. Not always for the kids. Ghostface Killah, U-God, Cappadonna, Masta Killa and Raekwon all make appearances (the video was shot after a show in Vancouver), and if you’re still reading what I’m writing, I don’t know what else to tell you.
