Vocalist Sonya Teclai is a newcomer around these parts, but with releases like “Own,” she could very well be around for a long time.
“Own” is dope for multiple reasons. For one, the Egyptian and Eritrean songstress is doing right by Aaliyah. Her style is sultry, but not in the usual sexual way. Instead, her confidence and self-assured delivery let us know that she’s found her lane and staying there. Plus, the way that her voice interacts with those warbly synths makes for a cool combination.
She’s not a direct comparison to Aaliyah, but she should nonetheless be careful around Drizzy. While you’re at it, get lost in her SoundCloud before her Heatwave EP drops later this summer.
