9 Songs That ‘NBA 2K’ Made Me Hate

By / 08.16.14

Last month it was announced that 2K Sports had employed Pharrell with the task of curating the NBA 2K15 soundtrack and the public mostly celebrated. Following in the footsteps of LeBron James and Jay Z before him, surely Skateboard P would pick an eclectic mix of sounds for the game and hopefully they wouldn’t include “Happy.”

When the 27 song list, sans “Happy,” was announced earlier this week it rang absolutely true. P picked a genre hopping blend of both old school and new school that fans will be glad to see (see the full list here).

Except me.

I cringed when I saw “Grindin” by the Clipse on the list. Why? Because every single year NBA 2K makes me hate its entire soundtrack of songs, one by one. Sure that first week is great fun, but after that “this is so cool let me bang out the “Grindin” beat on my coffee table while my buddy picks his team,” wares off I’ll probably be playing through my MyCareer on mute.

So you can thank Pharrell and 2K Sports when the pure joy of banging out the “Grindin” beat at the lunch table is wiped from your memory in October. We can also blame Hov and ‘Bron for ruining a few of our favorites the past few years as well, here are the nine songs they made us loathe hearing by planting them in our favorite basketball game.

1. Kanye West Ft. 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Kid Cudi and Pusha T “Mercy” On NBA 2K13

“Mercy” was the song of the summer in 2012, and still had plenty of life left when we got our hands on 2K13 in October, but by the time Thanksgiving came around it was dead and buried. The edited and cut up version that greeted us on the game didn’t help either.

2. Robin Thicke Ft. T.I. & Pharrell – “Blurred Lines” On NBA 2K14

You probably already hated “Blurred Lines” by the time you got your hands on 2K14. Me, too. That’s what made it even worse to watch your friend’s Jordan Brand Player of the Game dunking on your head to the tune of Robin’s last hit.

3. D.J.I.G. Ft. Elizabeth Eliades – “Now’s My Time” On NBA 2K12

“I just want to be hearrrrrrrrd!” *jams needle in ear drums*
