Andrew Wiggins Should Have Never Given This ESPN Interview

Poor Andrew Wiggins.

This guy is supposed to be having the time of his life right now, the newly minted number one draft pick should be in a summer-long state of celebration, he worked his whole life to get here. Instead, the team that drafted him is on a seemingly never ending quest to get rid of him before he ever even sets foot on a basketball court in their jersey.

The best player in the world has reportedly made it known he’d like his team to get rid of Wiggins to acquire someone else to help him win now, as if Wiggins is some talentless stiff and because of that Wiggins has been wrapped up in LeBron’s whirlwind summer. All things considered, the Toronto native probably just wants things to go back to normal.

So it’s no surprise to see Wiggins and his team trying to get back to business, hopping on the ESPN airwaves Saturday morning to hawk his official rookie trading card that will be exclusively with the brand Panini, which plastered it’s logo on a banner behind Wiggins in the name of product placement. SportsCenter host Bram Weinstein hits the ground running, opening up the interview with the following:

“Of course you’re wearing the Cleveland jersey, can you send me a picture of this I feel like it’s going to be a collector’s item.”

To which Wiggins replies innocently enough:

“Thank you. *laughs* I hope so one day”

Apparently, Wiggins didn’t get it, or maybe this is just Andrew full of youthful naiveté thinking Weinstein meant a collectors item along the lines of Michael Jordan’s rookie card and not of the “OMG look at Kobe in a Hornets hat, LOL #TBT” ilk. Ah well, Wiggins get’s a pass here, but the interview gets worse, because after some mundane basketball talk we get this:

Weinstein: “Have you spoken to (LeBron) personally?”
Wiggins: “I haven’t, I feel like I’ve had a busy summer, it’s hard for me to get on the phone and contact people, I can only imagine what it’s like for him.”

Harmless enough, I’m sure, as Bron is a busy guy.

Then again, he was chilling with new teammate Tristan Thompson the other day on Instagram, and Kyrie Irving told ESPN that he talks to LBJ “a lot.” Ouch, maybe it’s one of those Kobe/Tim Duncan things where he doesn’t talk to rookies? Who knows.

But Bram wasn’t done there, after that he sets Wiggins up for failure with his follow-up question

“Is there anything you’d like to say to him to maybe suggest that you’d like to be his teammate?”

(Damn, he’s not going to answer that, is he?)

“Um, shoot, I don’t really know what to say…”

(ah f*ck he’s going to)

“When I’m in Cleveland I’m going to play as hard as I can, give it my all. I’ll play with whoever.”

So here’s the number one pick, on national television, pleading to a teammate who will probably never actually be his teammate that he’ll be a good guy to play with. Why Wiggins’ agent and the rest of his team allowed this to air I’ll never know. To make matters worse Wiggins is wearing a damn Cavs jersey that will probably have to be sent to some third world country like the Miami Heat 2014 NBA Champions gear.

But wait, there’s more. After admitting that the Cavs haven’t talked to him about his future Wiggins was then asked what he wanted to happen if he had the choice

“Um *long pause* You know, I just want to play for a team that wants me, so whichever team wants me I’ll play for.”

Then we get to the Vine worthy doozy, Weinstein goes for the kill and ask Wiggins straight out if he thinks the Cavs want him on their team, to which he responded with:

*really long pause*

“Yeah”

*another long pause*

“I hope so.”

Wow, this guy might hate basketball by the time training camp starts, and I really wouldn’t blame him.

Now, Weinstein was asking questions that he admitted were “pointed” but that’s his job, we want to know this stuff, and the interview was so hilariously awkward you can’t look away. As for the trade, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said over the weekend, on the record, that a Kevin Love trade is expected August 23rd or 24th, and the 23rd is coincidentally the first day Wiggins is eligible to be traded. Shocker, I know.
