My boss for the security side job I work has a story about A$AP Rocky right before the Harlemite blew up.

Tasked with providing security for the Creator’s Project event in Brooklyn in October 2011, my boss met with Rocky and the A$AP Mob before the gig, just to see whom he was dealing with. My boss, for the record, is one of those grizzled, burly New York City lifers who split his time growing up between the Lower East Side–when it was still primarily working-class Jews–and Flatbush, Brooklyn. He was the head of Studio 54’s security in its heyday, so he’ll knock the head of just about anybody who crosses his sh*t.

In any case, the event organizers introduced my boss to Rocky and the Mob. My boss told them he could rap, by saying something like, “look, I can do it, too: ‘motherf*cker, motherf*cker, motherf*cker!'” He wasn’t trying to be disrespectful, but just wanted to relay that, I’m security, and this is what you’re dealing with. I’ll be cool and doing my thing, while you be cool and do yours. Apparently, Rocky and the Mob dug the hell out of this, so they started chanting along, too: “motherf*cker, motherf*cker, motherf*cker!”

Noisey’s latest five-part documentary, SVDDXNLY, traces the path Rocky’s taken since that particular show, which was only his third live gig ever. There’s footage of him crowd-surfing into the hipster-engorged crowd that day in DUMBO, as there is throughout the rest of the first part of this series. Noisey definitely applies a veneer of navel-gazing*, but since it involves the prettiest, hypest motherf*cker, it’s worth the watch–giving a better insight to the guy behind the quasi-modeling photos and Houston-Meets-Uptown jams.

Watch below. Noisey’s second installment drops Aug. 12.

* — Noisey’s parent company Vice put on that Creator’s Project show and was an integral part in helping the Mob to notoriety.
