Look, Childish Gambino can call out as many rappers as he wants, but the rap community at large won’t embrace him until he quits directly aping Drake.
Case in point: “Candler Rd.” The track–which has a part one and part two–sees Gambino doing both the “Worst Behavior” and “Underground King” Drakes, alternating between sh*t-talking with a one-two punch over a trap beat and sh*t-talking with a smoother flow and some singing tossed in. It’s okay, but Gambino can do better. More importantly, he can do something more original than “Candler Rd.,” which passes mainly based off the production of its second half.
Perhaps that’s the point since the track’s potentially named after a street in Decatur–you know, the “trap.” But c’mon: the rapper-who’s-also-an-actor identity Gambino pines for won’t happen if this constitutes his loosies.
