Look, I hated Yeezus. It sucked, it was garbage and it was awful. Spare me the “It was art, it was daring and you don’t get it,” rhetoric. I didn’t like it.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t like Kanye. I’m actually a huge fan of Mr. West. So imagine the relief on my face when I heard the snippet for “All Day,” the song that is rumored to be the first release of his next album. A return to a seemingly more, um, “traditional” sound is all I need to be excited about the new Kanye album that will supposedly be dropping in September.

And because Kanye is Kanye, the extremely rough version of the song, which sounds like it was recorded by somebody holding their phone to a speaker, actually topped an official Billboard chart. Yes, you read that right.

On Thursday, “All Day” climbed to the top of Billboard’s relatively new Trending 140 chart. The chart is a collaboration with Twitter and is basically a list of trending topics for songs in real time. The list constantly fluctuates, so Kanye isn’t on the real-time list anymore, but he was #3 for the day while I typed this. Kanye continues to have that rare mix of people who adore him and people who absolutely abhor him that will always keep a constant dialogue going.

“All Day” is the song Kanye mentioned in his recent GQ interview, citing inspiration from big brother Hov:

Even lyrically, I think about certain lines that I say on my new single, which is called “All Day,” that usually Jay would say, but Jay’s not on there. So I say, All day, nigga, it’s Ye, nigga. Shopping for the winter, it’s just May, nigga. Ball so hard, man, this shit cray, nigga. You ain’t getting money unless you got eight figures. Right? Jay would have said that. And then eventually I would have came in with, like, whatever I come in with. But the balance of a meal is that when people walk in, they want water first. People definitely weren’t getting water first on Yeezus. I do fight with myself to say, “Keep fighting.” But also, you know, you can’t win every single fight. It’s a long war, and if you’re out there trying to, like, blow up every single building, you won’t win the war.

If Yeezus was simple an experimental phase akin to what he was going through during the 808′s & Heartbreak sessions, then that is fine with me. I’ll accept it being an outlier, as long as Ye returns to form for his next outing.
