After several weeks of speculation, Angel di Maria is no longer a member of Real Madrid. The Argentine midfielder just secured his transfer away from the Bernabeu to a former English giant that’s now flopping around like a fish out of water, Manchester United.
The fee? An English Premier League record $99 million, with di Maria’s weekly wage at Old Trafford pushing 300,000 pounds. The signing makes it the most expensive in EPL history.
Di Maria is United’s fourth big signee of the summer, coming on the heels of Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo all signing with the Red Devils. He is also not a defender, something the team’s first two performances show that they desperately need. Di Maria is, however, a talented and commanding midfielder who will probably play centrally, a left-footed pulse who will help distribute and cofound EPL defenses throughout the season.
The new signee told United’s website that, “I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United…. but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for,” something that reeks of bullsh*t, but a statement that will please United fans nonetheless.
The signing brings United’s summer spending spree to over 130 million pounds (lots and lots in American currency), and the club might not be done yet: the soccer world’s rumor machine alleges that United might also be looking to sign Ajax and Dutch defender Daley Blind, too.
