Actor Orlando Jones Starts ‘Bullet Bucket Challenge’ To Bring Awareness To Gun Violence

Personally, I don’t have much of an issue with the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, especially realizing how much money has been raised since its start. Having had a great-aunt who passed from the slowly-deteriorating disease, it’s one worth bringing awareness towards.

But actor Orlando Jones, a member of the National Rifle Association, had an idea for a new challenge that involved a bucket. Only this time, instead of ice water, ammunition serves as the main ingredient. If not already apparent what it represents, the “Bullet Bucket Challenge” is designed to bring to the forefront the very real issue of gun violence in America.

“For me, I became a member [of the NRA] because I wanted to affect change in the organization. Do I share all of their ideals? No. I’m not a monolith in culture. I don’t agree with all black people on everything either. I’m a complex person and I wanted to make that point,” Jones stated in a post on his Tumblr.

As to whether celebrities are obligated to speak out, the actor disagreed. “I don’t think this is the McCarthy era and we should be writing lists of who stood up and who sat down. It’s something I feel strongly about, but that doesn’t mean I’m a better person than anyone else,” he said.

“You’re looking into an American city and it looks like you’re looking into a war zone. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a city in the world look like a war zone, and to be fair, where was my voice then? So for me, it was like, I can no longer be silent.”

Point well-taken.
