President Obama issued a statement regarding the murder of Michael Brown, the St. Louis teen gunned down by a police officer. With release filled with carefully chosen words, he called the killing “heartbreaking” while issuing condolences to Brown’s family and also noted that the Department of Justice is investigating the situation.

“The death of Michael Brown is heartbreaking, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and his community at this very difficult time. As Attorney General Holder has indicated, the Department of Justice is investigating the situation along with local officials, and they will continue to direct resources to the case as needed. I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds. Along with our prayers, that’s what Michael and his family, and our broader American community, deserve.”

Critics were very quick to point out that the president issued a statement on Robin Williams passing within three hours of the news. Meanwhile, it’s taken him three days to say anything publicly regarding Michael Brown. Many Twitter users took note and commented on the president’s presence or lack thereof.

Were the reactions insensitive to Williams and his family? Without a doubt. But there’s an equally insensitive sentiment regarding a separate family in mourning, a town on edge and a nation waiting and watching for direction.

Suffice it to say the president’s between a rock and a hard place.
