Flip on MTV Jams or any FM dial and you’re bound to find an August Alsina song serenading the airwaves. Over the past few years, the razor-sharp artist has been building a solid name for himself organically and earned a reputation as one of R&B’s most versatile up & coming stars. He’s done songs with quite a few of your favorite rappers already and will inevitably be crooning the choruses alongside many more for years to come.

To help folks get to know August before he’s a household name, here are five essential pieces of info about the buzzing Southern singer.

NO At Heart

First and foremost, August Alsina reps New Orleans to the fullest. Despite growing up partially in Houston and spending more of his time these days in The A, this Crescent City up & comer makes a point to rep his roots throughout every mixtape he drops.

In an effort to move past the complexities of his difficult upbringing, Alsina initially started to push his musical passion early, by uploading videos of himself covering songs by acts like Lyfe Jennings and Musiq Soulchild at the age of 14. However, it wasn’t until he moved to Atlanta and started dropping mixtapes that he gained notoriety amongst the local DJs and eventually signed a joint deal with Def Jam and The Dream’s label, Radio Killa.

Versatile Style

Although August would probably be classified as a singer in most minds, the content this 21-year-old produces is far from your mother’s favorite R&B act. He might sound sultry and look just as sharp as your average pop star, but this Big Easy kid grew up rough and attitude, sex and drugs litter his lyrics. His style is often considered similar to Trey Songz, who he apparently doesn’t get along with.

Hits On Deck

By releasing six projects since 2011, August Alsina inevitably has some jams to his name. However, beyond burners like his 2012 Juvenile-assisted single “Throwback” and the Lil Wayne-inspired intro to his 2013 mixtape The Product 2 mixtape, his most recent project – Downtown: Life Under the Gun – was his first on Def Jam and featured his breakthrough radio record with Trinidad James, “I Luv This Sh*t.”

Testimony Time

After building his buzz to a swarm, Alsina is finally ready to take his career to the next level, dropping his debut album Testimony on April 15. His latest singles are a slow-burning joint with Jeezy called “Make It Home” and a sweat-ready dedication to his hood loves with Rich Homie Quan, called ““Ghetto.”
