50 cent interscope deal

Say what you will about 50 Cent as a friend/father/mentor/rapper/business partner, but Curtis gives a nice interview. Doing a press run for Animal Ambition: An Untamed Desire To Win*, Fif dropped through Canada’s Business News Network. Donning his usual Yankess cap and shit-eating smile, Curtis spoke about his new album plus exiting Interscope and the small parting gift he received.

On Ambition… serving as a reintroduction to the public:

“You can expect it to be exciting. For me it’s my reintroduction. ‘Cause I’ve spent a long time period on hiatus. I was in the back portion in the music business. I was in the business portion of music for four years. Because it was my fifth and final album requirement for Interscope we was in a position where we would have to do audits and go through the books and everything. It was conflicts in different areas.

But the conflicts paid off for Curtis:

“So, the language in the contracts spoke to the same light and the way I would be paid off a ringtone…if that’s the way I was to be paid off the singles would mean that they owed me like another $23 million maybe. So we went through that process and it took—for four years actually. It took a while for us to get through it… I was paid. And then everything was comfortably—we resumed back to making music.”

The takeaways:

1. Somehow, some way, 50 got $23 million for leaving the label. Which has to make him the Gilbert Arenas of rap, right?

2. Fif was a star, isn’t (really) anymore, and wants to become one again. He didn’t like the way Interscope was playing ball, so he built a brand new court for himself. Time will tell if the move pays off, but he really didn’t have anything to lose.

* — Still one of the best album titles in rap history.
