The Good: Even though I think “Pilot” is mediocore at best as a song, I have to give 50 credit for embracing the whole I’m-indie, I-do-what-I-please spirit. The song was out for less than 24 hours before Fif had already followed the mp3 up by releasing a visual.
The Bad: Until 50’s making relevant music again, none of the above matters. It’s just not good, word to Stoute. It doesn’t share any of the DNA of material that helped Curtis gain popularity in the first place. His nuanced flow and the way he strikes his words are both there but the production is lethargic at best. However, I think he may find his way back to an agreeable sound soon.
The Bottom Line: While he won’t regain chart-topping sales with Animal Ambition, his new freedom means he stands a chance at re-engaging old fans and maybe snagging a few new ones. I just don’t think it’s going to happen with songs like “Pilot.”
