Many rap fans living outside the New York tri-state area’s first knowledge of Linden Boulevard came from A Tribe Called Quest. The hip-hop group regularly shouted out the incredibly long street in many of their raps, most noticeably in “Check The Rhime” with Tip rapping, “Back in the days on the boulevard of Linden, we used to kick routines and presence was fittin.” Not to mention the song’s video, which featured the group performing atop Nu-Clear Cleaners on 192nd and Linden.

With the recent passing of Phife Dawg, there’s now a petition asking lawmakers to co-name a part of Linden Blvd in honor of A Tribe Called Quest. Hip Hop Group Discussion’s Tee Smif hopes to deliver the petition to New York City councilmembers I. Daneek Miller and Melissa Mark-Viverito in an effort to name Linden (between 192nd and 193rd streets) after the legendary group.

Sadly, this week it was reported that Malik “Phife Dawg” Isaac Taylor of the Iconic Hip Hop group A Tribe Called Quest has died. We are requesting the cooperation of Council Member I. Deneek Miller and Speaker Mark-Viverito to support our new proposed co-naming of Linden Boulevard between 192 Street and 193 Street to: A Tribe Called Quest Boulevard.

So far, signatures are nearing 2,000.
