“Black sheep, no miss Bo Peep, Motherf*** police ‘til they release all of my OG’s, You could lean on me ‘til you Morgan Free”
It’s been a bit difficult for me to really understand trecent Ab-Soul records from These Days without hearing the album in one complete sitting, but simply taking “World Runners” at face value there seem to be at least a couple things to note.
For one, I’d make a guess the Nikki Jean connect happened after her fantastic cover of “Drift Away,” that caught Soulo’s ears. And who’s to say that she didn’t bring along her onetime collaborator Lupe Fiasco on for the ride.
But no matter now the track came together, it’s something of an oddity, in that it marks a stylistic departure for all three artists. It’s also the first time that Lu and Nikki have appeared together on wax since the masterpiece, “Hip-Hop Saved My Life,” which is potentially Lupe’s greatest record ever. In the end, “World Runners” is probably something that will grow over time, and most likely make more sense in context of the entire album.
These Days is now up for pre-order on iTunes.
