So forget that Bruno and The Dictator ever happened. Erase it from your memory, and let the guy who created it, Sacha Baron Cohen, bathe you in nostalgia.
Variety reports that cable network FXX has ordered up Ali G: Rezurection, which will repackage every episode of Baron Cohen’s Da Ali G Show for FXX, including those previously unreleased. As part of the deal, Baron Cohen will incorporate original intros into each old episode. FXX hopes to premiere the series in February 2014.
This is awesome for a couple of reasons. For those unfamiliar, Da Ali G Show – which premiered in the U.K. in 2003 and then aired on HBO from 2003-2004 – was great, and was Baron Cohen’s springboard to the current stardom he’s enjoying now. His Borat and Bruno characters started on Da Ali G Show, and Baron Cohen’s interviews with notable world leaders and celebrities as British wanker Ali G are sublime (see below for Ali G’s insanely quotable interview with former Secretary-General of UN Boutros Boutros-Ghali).
Ali G: Rezurection also paves the way to introduce Baron Cohen’s original series to a wider audience than DVD sales and HBO could. Lots of people know Borat and Bruno, but fewer know how those characters metastasized into their film personas.
Here’s new viewers’ chance to acquaint themselves. And to that we say, “respect.”
