Andrew Bynum needs some sort of intervention. The ‘Lego Man’ haircut was a funny, but ultimately harmless distraction that the internet (naturally) ran with. But when news breaks that Philadelphia’s prized import set back his knee recovery even further by bowling, he deserves some criticism.
Athletes injuring themselves away from their sport isn’t a new phenomenon, but every time it happens, the most apt reaction is a face palm. A healthy Bynum in the Sixers’ lineup will make all the difference between a playoff team and a lottery team in the suddenly-stacked Eastern Conference. And if you look hard enough, you can envision a Bynum/Jrue Holiday-led squad evolving into one of the East’s best over the next couple of years.
But setbacks like this are going to frustrate and alienate the team and fan base, and when they come in such a self-destructive manner, there’s little anyone can do to defend him.
