The lockout may be drawing to a close but part of me hates to see the great, “lemons to lemonade” work done by Wieden + Kennedy go to waste. Directed by Lance Acord and created in part by Park Pictures, W+K fashions Kevin Durant as a man of the people in the latest (and possibly last?) commercial in Nike Basketball’s “Basketball Never Stops” campaign titled “Paint The Town.” Playing in a smaller market has the silver lining of placing fans in close proximity to star athletes, the degrees of separation seemingly removed and KD makes the most of his connection with Oklahoma City residents as seen in this spot. While soul legend Sam Cooke’s “Good Times” carries in the background, the camera catches the Thunder forward playing pickup games around town with local seniors, church-goers, truckers and a matchup with J. Cole. Organic with a touch of the dramatic.
And of course, the commercial does include the Zoom KD IV, which is up for pre-order on NDC in the “Blackout” and “Thunder” road colorways. I’m loving how Durant’s moderately priced model is gaining appreciation from consumers and designers are starting to show him even more love and attention. Three upcoming colorways – the Nerfs (recently confirmed for December 17th), the Year Of The Dragons and the Weatherman version – all look insanely clean and creative.
