When writing this, the word ‘pride’ comes to mind. Unaware of whether or not this is actually national news, or just some asterisk of awesomeness to credit Detroiters worldwide, a petition has been started locally to halt country-rockers Nickelback from performing during halftime of your yearly NFL Thanksgiving festivities. Yes, thanks to one Ann Arbor fan who hates drawn-out, over-exaggerated country drawls, the team that went winless three seasons ago is now dictating who graces the stage in between quarters at Ford Field.
The petition on Change.org, which started as a far cry, has now earned over 40,000 online signatures. An excerpt can be read below.
This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime.
Despite being both assumptive and bias towards a band that has 40 million views of one song on YouTube, the originator of said petition has a point. Even though Eminem is a recluse and Kid Rock does every large-scale event The D has to offer, there are plenty of other notable local musicians that could keep hometown fans happy and still appeal to a national audience. Shoot, didn’t Bob Segar just put out another greatest hits album? Or, even better, how about Mayer Hawthorne, who is actually petitioning for the gig over at Rolling Stone?
Whatever route the league decides on, I’d say it’s safe to bet most fans would rather see Motown soul or “Old Time Rock ‘N Roll” than whatever country-fried corniness these guys are bringing to the table this Turkey Day.
