Big Boi Gets Blessed By Dr. Cornel West

The homie Grim from UNN sent over this footage over. Video of Dr. Cornel West presenting Big Boi with a 2008 Renaissance Award at the The National Black Arts Festival, held December 6th in Atlanta. The Collective Renaissance Guild of the NBAF honored Big for his innovative work with the Atlanta Ballet in the groundbreaking production of Big.

It’s good to see Big get recognition for this. Branching out, and doing so successfully, are excellent signs for the directions that Hip-Hop is capable of heading as a culture. While ballet may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it adds credibility to what it is are artists are able to create & participate in besides music. With acting & theater credits under his belt along with recognition of this stature, Big is proving himself to be a man of the arts.

Two things are for certain: It easily trumps Jim Jones’ theater foray and branching out sure beats being the old dude @ the label, still rappin’ about nothing.
