“Life is all about taking the proper steps. Sometimes you move forward and sometimes you move backwards. But at least you’re moving.”
Big K.R.I.T.’s Week Of… comes to a close having accomplished its assumed goal, that being to stall listeners out until Cadillactica releases and remind everyone how truly versatile he is as an artist. He took in a few unexpected guests – from Ross on “New Agenda” to Ferg on “Lac Lac” – and shared production duties along the way (“Wolf On Wall Street”) as well as staying with his usual self-contained approach of generating his own beats and relying on his own rhymes to carry tracks.
For the final shot, he resorts back to his tried and true compadres, Big Sant and Smoke DZA, for “Steps.” I think I hear a faint use a KRS-One sample sprinkled throughout the song while K.R.I.T. tiptoes with his flow over his own midtempo production. Again, nothing unfamiliar here, perhaps just reassuring that his time spent off the radar was well spent.
Everyone’s favorite country cousin also debuted a documentary of the same name, a 12-minute journey that follows him during the time spent opening for Macklemore and Ryan Lewis over previous months. As he told Noisey, “”Touring has played a major role in my career, especially while on the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis tour. I got to perform in new arenas and to a new audience. It was definitely learning experience.”
