In My Mind is looking is shaping up like an early career magnum opus.
Even though BJ the Chicago Kid showed us the “Love Inside” him and took us to “Church” with him on both coasts, he still wants us to know that s**t ain’t sweet in the Chi. Rounding up his cronies Constantine and Buddy for “Man Down,” BJ turns the aggressiveness up ten notches and still sounds as smooth as a Bolivian snowdrift. The Motown rapper uses the boastful chants from his partners to send shots at anyone thinking his LA postcode has made him forget where to stash the whistle.
“If you want it come and get it
I’ve got it on me
I’ve got everybody talking bout it
I’ve got it on me”
With In My Mind dropping February 19th, this is exactly the kind of diversity we wanted to see from an artist we’ve earmarked to achieve legendary heights. Even though it has BJ’s fingerprints all over it, the dark and brooding sounds in the backdrop could easily have been a homicidal extra left on the cutting room floor of the Dr. Dre sessions. Given that The Kid has the good Doc’s number on speed dial, well…It’s probably worth taking Gotty’s advice and pre-ordering the first must-have album of 2016.
