Boldy James – “Goose Egg” Video

Boldy James has always been an interesting character. Obscure as his name may be to the mainstream, there’s a real cult following backing him, bound by his wordplay and unique delivery. As such, it made sense to see Nas sign Boldy to his newly christened Mass Appeal insignia. Every label needs one or two street rappers, after all, and with the proper promotion, Boldy could be a much bigger name.

So what to make of “Goose Egg”? If you’re already on board with the movement, you’ll pat James on the back for staying true to his original vision. He didn’t sell out for anybody, serving up mounds of dope-dealing bars through that hazy, devil-may-care flow.

But I doubt it’s going to earn James any new fans. The biggest complaint that I have against Boldy is that his style can get a bit too hazy at times – it takes effort to appreciate. And if you’re trying to win new fans, wouldn’t it make sense to make the most accessible music possible?
