Samuel Deeds 400 At The Brickyard

This weekend marked the second time I was invited to the Brickyard 400 as part of the Capture The Crown competition. If you recall, my team took home the iPad and the trip to All-Star Weekend. This year, stakes were higher as the winning team got a trip to New York and Super Bowl tickets. Unfortunately, my squad didn’t come out with the victory but my second trip to the Brickyard was just as much fun as the first.

Here are some reasons it was so great.

The Purple Carpet — Once again, we got treated like royalty by the folks at Crown Royal. The weekend started with a Whisky tasting, filet mignon at Mo’s and things only picked up from there. As many of you know, I have Bibz at the house with me so sleep has been a sneaky temptress. Welp, the dope room on the 26th floor of the J.W. Marriott definitely remedied that situation. I was fed, handed as much Crown as I wanted and slept like a baby. Shout out to Crown for taking care of me for four days in Indy.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway — Once again, the Brickyard 400 was an incredible spectacle. The track is huge and there’s always something fun going on. While the race itself is fun to watch in the beginning and the last few laps, the real fun takes place in between as you go from the Museum to the games to the tailgating. The people are all having a great time and it’s one of the best sporting environments around.

The Heroes — One of the best aspects of the weekend is how it’s dedicated to real-life heroes. Every year the entire race is named after a hero who’s voted in the Your Hero’s Name Here contest. This year, the race was named after Samuel Deeds, who survived a tour overseas and saved a group of people who were drowning…and he did this WHILE RECOVERING FROM A HERNIA! Deeds got treated like a celebrity and deservedly so. Crown and the folks at NASCAR make sure to focus most of the festivities on heroes – police officers, firefighters, troops, etc. You really gain an added appreciation for their sacrifices when you hear the stories and see how remarkable these people are.

“Taylor Gang” — Again, all of this was made possible by the good folks at Taylor who organize and plan our stay, set up the scavenger hunt and take care of anything we need. Plus, they’re all great fun. I genuinely get a big kick out of just hanging with them at the bar and talking about any and everything. A special shoutout has to go to my team coach Christina who had me doubled over laughing every damn minute. She’s one of the coolest people you’ll meet and I was lucky to be riding around in golf carts with her for two days.

Drink! — Last time I came back from Indy screaming the praises of Bulleit Bourbon and how it mixes with Coke. Well, this time the new cocktail I tried was the Crown Maple and Ice Tea. A lot of people swear by Maple but I was having trouble finding a good mix for it, but the Maple and sweet tea may be my new favorite go-to drink. You’re welcome.
