Chamillionaire should always get a pass, even if his career seemed to derail as soon as he hit his commercial peak. I can’t speak towards the circumstances surrounding his fall from grace, but every time a track like “Some Things Never Change” surfaces, I’m left scratching my head.
The skill – the attack, attack, attack bars that he honed with Paul Wall before becoming a national sensation – is still there and, from a pure talent basis, I don’t think that I can name many people currently in rap who can spit better than Cham. Kendrick, yes. Maybe some dudes from Slaughterhouse. Eminem, probably. Phonte, absolutely. But it’s not a very long list.
Michael Jordan can just play basketball. Joseph Gordon-Levitt can just act. And Chamillionaire, no matter how his career looks in its entirety, can just rap his ass off. No word what ‘…Change’ is leading up to (perhaps the long-rumored Poison album?), but respect where respect is due.
